Olfactory Archives

by Ng Choon Wee

"Olfactory Archives" aims to propose an innovative approach to preserving built heritage by examining existing conservation strategies in Singapore. Instead of focusing solely on the physical aspects of buildings, this project emphasises the intangible elements of space, particularly through the exploration of scent and the memories associated with it. By delving into the olfactory experiences that define historically, architecturally, and socially significant spaces, Olfactory Archives seeks to capture and convey the essence of these environments in a more holistic manner.

Additionally, the framework developed within the publication necessitates appropriate treatments for buildings under the threat of traditional conservation. By drawing parallels between the rituals of death of a person and the death of a building, it guides users of the space to have proper closure, through celebration and documentation in the inevitable fate of a building within Singapore's urban landscape.
